1956: Alfred Pennington, a DuPont company doctor, is asked to solve obesity problem among executives. He puts them on unlimited meat, eggs, and fat with zero carbs or sugar. Results: average weight loss of 22 pounds in 3.5 months while eating to satiety. No hunger. No calorie counting. The diet worked so well DuPont made it company policy. Pennington published findings: "Treatment of Obesity with Calorically Unrestricted Diets." Medical establishment response: "This contradicts calories in, calories out. Must be wrong." The diet was buried. Calories in, calories out became dogma. On the bright side, Pennington's foray into low carb dieting ended up inspiring a certain Dr Atkins.
