A German teacher is sounding the alarm over conditions at a secondary school in the Rhineland, where she says around 75% of pupils have a migrant background and violence, drugs and serious behavioral problems, such as prostitution in toilets, have become part of everyday school life. Many pupils come from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The special-education teacher, identified only as “Carola S.,” told Bild that fights and shouting regularly disrupt classrooms and the schoolyard, with police sometimes called several times a week. She also revealed that drugs are dealt on school grounds and described an extreme case involving a 15-year-old girl who prostituted herself in the school toilets for drugs and money, later became pregnant, and left the school. Academic outcomes are also suffering: almost 40% of pupils failed to obtain their secondary-school leaving certificate this year. The teacher also described cultural conflicts, including a Syrian father who objected to his son being taught by a woman. Carola said she herself was punched in the face while intervening in a fight three weeks earlier, leaving her with a split lip. She says colleagues have also been insulted, threatened and even ambushed after school.

She accused authorities of abandoning teachers, saying: “They’ve left us to fend for ourselves.”
