US OIL & GAS ASSOCIATION: 98% US oil and gas companies are classified as small businesses (500 or fewer employees). 70% have less than 10 employees. These small companies drill 90% of all new U.S. oil and natural gas wells and are responsible for the majority of new production brought online each year.
