ECHOES OF WAR: Remember Adam Helmer. He gets no famous poem like Paul Revere, no marble statue in a grand square. But on September 17, 1778, he ran 26 miles ahead of death itself and saved a whole valley of families, and that is as fine a thing as any soldier did in the entire war.
