Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic congressional candidate, made the statement, "I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me," in a now-deleted tweet from 2019.
On Twitter (now X), on December 23, 2019. Darializa Avila Chevalier (then using the account @darializabonet) posted: “I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me .” The post is archived on the Wayback Machine (status ID 1209247594439946243). Screenshots of it show a timestamp of around 3:01 PM that day. The account was a personal one she used before entering politics; she later deleted it (around May 2022). The tweet resurfaced in 2026 during her successful Democratic primary campaign for New York’s 13th Congressional District and was confirmed as authentic by Snopes and other fact-checker. She has since addressed the backlash,
expressing regret over the pain it caused while framing it in the context of her feelings at the time.
That doesn't sound like an apology for her actions or conduct or disrespect. It sounds like she's trying to claim that she's got religious powers over people's feelings and the power to wash away hurt feelings. Bring back witch burnings.
