SAMA HOOLE: A wrinkle is a sugar reaction, and the compound doing it has a name. Glucosepane. A cross-link. Measurable, published, and the most abundant one in human tissue.

A wrinkle is a sugar reaction, and the compound doing it has a name. Glucosepane. A cross-link. Measurable, published, and the most abundant one in human tissue. Glucose does not need an enzyme to attack collagen. The two react directly, chemically, wherever they touch. What comes out is a weld. Two collagen fibres fused where they were built to slide past one another. Welded collagen is stiff. It does not spring back. The enzymes that clear worn collagen cannot grip it either, so it is never taken out. It stays where it formed. Which would not matter if you replaced the collagen. You do not. Estimates put the half-life in skin at over a decade. So the scaffolding under your face was laid down in your twenties and has been collecting welds ever since, and not one of them has ever come out. Every year of blood sugar you have run, recorded in a material your body does not renew. You can watch the same reaction in a clinic. Long-standing diabetics cannot press their palms flat together, because the collagen in their tendons has set. Doctors call it the prayer sign. Same molecule. Same weld. Different tissue. Sugar was rationed in Britain from 1940 to 1953. Thirteen years, eight ounces a week at its tightest, and an entire generation built its collagen under that ceiling. Nobody sold them a serum. Nobody needed to. They sell you collagen to drink, and there is not one product on earth that removes a weld once it has formed.

The cream goes on the dead cells at the top. The reaction finished years ago, two millimetres underneath.
