Meet James T. Butts Jr., mayor of formerly ghetto Inglewood, CA, which used to have one of the highest murder rates in the country. Back in 2015, Inglewood made a deal with sports magnate Stan Kroenke to become the home of SoFi stadium and the new LA Rams. As part of the deal, Kroenke’s companies would pay about $400 million upfront solely for infrastructure projects on behalf of Inglewood, which Inglewood would pay back as city incomes drastically increased after the opening of SoFi. SoFi quickly became not just the best new stadium in the NFL, but is arguably the best new stadium in the world. It hosted one Super Bowl already, and is hosting another in 2027, because it’s viewed as a national gem. It’s set to be the main fixture of the 2028 Olympics. It also completely changed the face of Inglewood, which is now a genuinely up and coming area, the first one ever in what used to be called “South central,” the vast flat ghetto of the Southland. Inglewood is now clean, beautifying, and filled with construction projects; a genuine and overwhelming success. So now it is now time for Inglewood and Mayor Butts to pay the piper. They have to pay back the loaned infrastructure money to Kroenke’s companies. But guess what. They don’t have it! The new city income flooded in exactly as expected, but Inglewood didn’t save the funds meant to go back to Kroenke. So instead, the City of Inglewood sued to invalidate the deal, putting the entire project and all its progress, and the 2028 Olympics, at risk. And sure enough, since “disenfranchised” cities like Inglewood can’t be expected to honor their contracts, a presumably liberal judge just let them out of the deal, finding the original agreement predatory and invalid. So now Kroenke is left holding the $400 million bag, after literally changing the destiny of Inglewood and LA at large. But Butts says he’s “willing to negotiate as partners.” No good deed goes unpunished. Pure third world.
