I promise you, going out in the sunlight is the best antidepressant. Do it with your shoes and socks off, wiggle the toes, put your feet on the ground, feel the moisture, the pebbles, the curvatures of the earth, roots of the trees, and overall terrain. Expose more of your body to the sun. Go shirtless or wear a tanktop. Wear shorts. No sunglasses. Let that sun touch you. Lay out for 30 minutes on one side, then turn over, let the sun hit your back. That one-hour walk and rest is the gold standard antidepressant. Follow this up with a good cheeseburger, maybe some mackerel for potent DHA.

I'm still trapped on the same SSRI I was prescribed as a child. I cannot come off it because of the severe debilitating withdrawals. Withdrawal is a misnomer. This is a neurological injury that can persist for years and may be permanent for some. Suffering is so immense many people end up taking their lives in withdrawal. I first tried to come off antidepressants at 23 years old. I am now 30. I've been in protracted withdrawal for the last 7 years, all caused by the standard doctor-directed taper that damaged my nervous system. What happened to me is not rare. My story is just one window into a much larger hidden Public Health crisis that is quietly devastating countless lives. It's my life's mission to create changes to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. The label doesn't warn you that these drugs can fundamentally alter your brain so severely that coming off may be impossible or that even one dose can cause irreversible loss of emotions and the ability to feel love leaving you chemically castrated and mentally lobotomized. When it does happen you're left blindsided, gaslit, and without any medical support. People have a fundamental right to full and honest information about the harms of SSRIs before they ever take them. When those risks are withheld it's not just unethical, it's a violation of basic human rights. We cannot give back the years that have been stolen from us. We cannot undo the lives that have already been devastated but we can prevent this unnecessary suffering from happening to anyone else. We urgently need black box warnings that clearly warn patients about the true life-altering and sometimes permanent risks, and we need federally endorsed, evidence-based tapering guidelines so people can come off their antidepressants safely without risking a brain injury. We need research and funding so we can better understand these injuries and provide real support for those who are already suffering.
Thank you to this Administration and Secretary Kennedy for your leadership and courage and taking on this hidden Public Health crisis as it will truly save countless lives.
