This is Operation Grapple, a series of atomic tests done near Christmas Island just south of Jakarta between 1957 and 1958 when there was pressure placed on the west during the nuclear weapons race.  

Earlier Britain's nuclear testing, called Operation Hurricane, tested on and near Malden Island, halfway between San Diego and Australia, was done in 1952. 

Britain's first successful test was in 1952 with Operation Hurricane,

The successful test of an atomic bomb in Operation Hurricane in October 1952 represented an extraordinary scientific and technological achievement, but Britain was still several years behind the United States, which had developed the more powerful thermonuclear weapons in the meantime.

America had her own testing in 1955 in about the same location in an operation called, Operation Wigwam.
