KEVIN STOCK: No one should need braces. Pre-industrial skulls don't have crooked teeth. Hunter-gatherers had broad dental arches with straight teeth and plenty of room for their wisdom teeth.

The cause is an evolutionary mismatch between what our mouths are designed to eat and the modern diet:

Poor maternal diet in utero (epigenetic inheritance)

* Bottle-fed formula

* Jarred commercial food

* Soft diet with little to no chewing

* Diet devoid of nutrition

This cocktail leads to small jaws, vaulted palates, mouths hanging open, mouth breathing, narrowed airways, and malocclusion. The solution is focusing on maternal nutrition, breastfeeding (if possible), weaning to real foods, chewing, proper oral posture, nasal breathing, and drastically increasing the consumption of the most nutrient dense, bioavailable foods for humans — meat. While prevention is the best strategy, there is some evidence you can make small improvements as an adult by remodeling bone via stimulating stem cells at sutures. 1. Diet: Lots of meat and chewing 2. Oral Posture: Mouth closed, tongue rests on palate, nasal breathing Though expectations should be tempered as most craniofacial changes happen in adolescence.
