Thinking is not a possession.  It's an act, and acts can be abandoned.  A piano in a house where nobody plays isn't broken.  It's abandoned.  Keep that distinction in your pocket.  The people running the machine you're about to meet don't need to damage the instrument.  They only need to make sure that nobody sits down to play.  When an airliner goes down, investigators don't look for one cause because there never is one.  They recover the black box and reconstruct the sequence.  The psychologist James Reason built his whole model of catastrophe on this.  Every system has layers of defense.  Every layer has holes and disaster happens on the rare day the holes line up.
