Your ancestors came home empty-handed more days than not. Three days of nothing, then a kill the size of a car, and everything in you was built around that rhythm. Your stomach stretches to four times its size, to take on a share of a carcass in one sitting, because the meat would not keep and the next one was not promised. Your gallbladder sits loaded for days, waiting to dump bile onto a sudden mountain of fat. No leaf-eater needs one. Your gut hands fat and protein a hormone that says enough, and the eating stops on its own. Sugar never got that hormone, because there was never a glut of it to stop. You have one store, and it stores fat. A day's worth of sugar, no store for protein, and a body that can lay down a lean month's fuel in a single feast. Your liver makes every gram of glucose you need out of the meat, because there was never a bag of rice on the savannah and there is still no essential carbohydrate. Your brain, when the kill is gone and the days run empty, switches to ketones made from your own fat, and runs clearer on them than it ever did on bread. Your growth hormone surges through the fast and holds your muscle, because a hunter who wasted in a lean week never hunted again. Your hunger comes as a wave, sends you out, and passes. It was never meant to nag you to a cupboard every ninety minutes. You share every bit of that kit with the lion, who eats 30 kilos at a kill and sleeps for two days, and the wolf, who eats a fifth of his own weight and walks away from the rest. Then nothing, until the next one. The stretch, the store, the switch, the sleep after. All of it predator's equipment, and all of it in you. You were built to gorge on fat, go without, and gorge again, and the going without was never the problem. It was the design. So eat like it. A pound of fatty meat, a slab of butter on it, once or twice a day, until you cannot face another bite, and then nothing until you are properly hungry again.Your ancestors came home empty-handed more days than not. Not a handful of almonds at eleven and a bowl of leaves at one. A lion does not graze. It feasts, and you were issued the same stomach.
