The lady pictured, Anna Gragnani, was alive during its dedication in 1927 and even helped to unveil the statue. It was the oldest Columbus statue in the South was the first monument in Richmond to have night illumination. The idea of Frank Realmuto, the statue was sculpted, erected and financed entirely by Virginians of Italian birth. The artist was Ferruccio Legnaioli.
