In the 1940s, a lobotomy represented the leading edge of psychiatric science, considered to be settled science. In 1949, the inventor of the procedure was awarded a Nobel Prize for his discovery

Dr. Antonio Egas Moniz.  For those who want a more precise definition of lobotomy, here you go:

lobotomy (from Greek λοβός (lobos) 'lobe', and τομή (tomē) 'cut, slice') or leucotomy is a form of  neurosurgical treatment for psychiatric disorder or neurological disorder (e.g. epilepsydepression) that involves severing connections in the brain's prefrontal cortex. The surgery causes most of the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain, to be severed.
