Christendom -- the state's tacit and explicit support for and defense of the Church -- built Western Civilization. In this particular case, the Pietà was commissioned and paid for by Cardinal Jean de Bilhères-Lagraulas, who was an advisor to Louis XI and Charles VIII, both strong French monarchs whose beneficence towards the Church allowed the Cardinal's beneficence to Michelangelo. Without Christendom's explicit protection, the Pietà would not exist.
