Biden administration to refer to Nina Jankowicz, who was appointed as the executive director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) short-lived Disinformation Governance Board in April 2022. The board aimed to coordinate efforts against disinformation threats to national security, such as foreign election interference or human trafficking misinformation. However, it faced intense backlash from conservatives, who dubbed it a "Ministry of Truth" (echoing George Orwell's 1984) and accused it of threatening free speech. The initiative was paused after just three weeks, and Jankowicz resigned amid personal attacks, including death threats.
